The Queen’s Diploma

The Queen’s Diploma is a sixth form initiative developed to prepare our young adults for and strengthen their opportunities in early adulthood and later life. It is an exciting initiative that inspires our students to extend themselves beyond the usual. The Diploma becomes a key ingredient in application writing: highlighting transferable skills and desirable character traits, and providing examples for competency-based questions on which they will later rely. Through this Diploma, our students will build new skills, gain a range of attributes and develop a habit of lifelong learning and commitment to citizenship. Students work to achieve at least 150 credits towards the Queen’s Diploma over 13-15 months with a graduation at the end. Students can pick which credits they would like to gain across the four strands.

Last week a group of pupils embarked on the Annual Foodie Road Trip to celebrate two of the South West's greatest award-winning foodie entrepreneurs who have been recognised with Royal Honours.

The first stop was the award-winning Darts Farm Food Hall and Food Market in Devon, a remarkable foodie haven having won the Best Farm Shop in the UK for a record 3 years.

The next stop was Lympstone Manor named the most luxurious hotel in the South West, awarded the World's Most Romantic Hotel and one of the World's Best Hotels by Condé Nast. This is a five-star Relais & Châteaux country house retreat boasts Michelin-starred dining. Our pupils experienced a tour of the kitchens, guestrooms and suites, the garden, grounds and pool. They even got to taste some of the homemade treats on offer.

Then they visited Mickey's Beach Bar and Restaurant run by Michael Caines MBE, followed by our South West supplier and producer of sustainable real vanilla pods LittlePod with the pupils getting to hear about food sustainability and provenance as well as a tour of the facilities.

With the Paris Olympics on the horizon, Queen's have a second OQ hoping to be involved! Tim Nurse has been selected as a travelling reserve for a Team GB Hockey squad! Tim made his senior GB debut in April 2023 and was part of the FIH Pro League in London recently🏑

A graduate of Bath University, Tim reports that “I’m a travelling reserve for Paris and it will be great to experience the Games with the squad. Six months ago I wouldn’t have believed I would be this involved so I feel very lucky and honoured to have this opportunity. I will do everything I can to help the team out.”🌟

On Friday, Year 8 went on a Geography and Art trip where they learned some interesting facts about bugs. In response to this trip, the pupils drew from observation using the technique of continuous lines with a pen. They then created mini sculptures from these drawings using wire and beads of all shapes. All of these beautiful sculptures are now hanging beautifully in the Art Department Tree. Well done, Year 8!🐝🦋🐞
