This week, the Prep School celebrated Science Week with the exciting theme of Change and Adapt. Pupils had the opportunity to learn from a variety of expert guest speakers, including farmers, vets, cardiologists, and nuclear engineers, who shared their insights into the ever-evolving world of science.
The Discovery Science Day was a highlight, with each year group taking part in hands-on lessons across biology, physics, and chemistry. Year 3 and Year 4 explored essential life skills in engaging first aid workshops, while Year 5 and Year 6 stepped into the senior school labs for exciting transition sessions, where they created coin batteries and explored other interactive experiments.
Demonstrating their High Performance Learning (HPL) creativity, pupils designed and made Science Week posters, with five outstanding designs selected to represent the school in a national competition. The Science Fair was a big success, with many fantastic models on display. The children did an excellent job presenting their projects, the Pre-Prep focused on animal adaptations and the Upper Prep tackled the subject of climate change.
All of this week’s fantastic discoveries and achievements will be celebrated in next week’s assembly!
Year 3
Year 3 enjoyed making lava lamps! They first added some water and food colouring to a bottle, before filling the rest up with oil and adding bicarbonate of soda to create bubbles. They finished their lava lamps by adding glitter and sequins. They also enjoyed creating a 3D flower model including the stem, filament, stigma, ovary and petals and creating marshmallow catapults.
The students also enjoyed a visit from a cardiologist for a session about how the human heart works. They listened to their own hearts with stethoscopes and asked lots of questions.
Year 4
For Science Week, Year 4 made edible slime using marshmallows, learnt about animal adaptions and took part in some First Aid activities, such as CPR, the recovery position and making a sling for a broken arm.
Year 5
Year 5 was learning about the human heart and how it works. They got to see and hold an animal heart!
Year 6
The Year 6 pupils designed aerodynamic paper planes, putting them through a series of tests and improvement rounds before seeing whose paper plan was the most successful!
