Foundation & MIST

Queen’s College is a member of the Methodist Independent Schools Trust (MIST). The Methodist Church is engaged in education as part of its Christian mission in the world and schools in the group aim to extend the Methodist ethos and character and contribute to diversity in education.

Founded in 1843 by leading local Methodists and originally named the West of England Wesleyan Proprietary Grammar School, Queen’s College took on its present name in 1887 to commemorate Queen Victoria’s Golden Jubilee. The school’s guiding aims include:

  • To be a caring Christian family community that is committed to fostering each individual’s full potential, considering both personal qualities and academic aspirations.
  • To uphold high educational standards in all academic, cultural, and sporting pursuits, promoting a passion for learning and disciplined study for all students, regardless of ability.
  • To engage actively with the wider community it serves, encouraging meaningful contributions and partnerships.
  • To worship as Christians within the Methodist tradition, embedding Christian values in both practice and teaching. The school provides a strong religious education curriculum, welcoming students of all faiths with openness and tolerance.
  • To encourage pupils in examining societal standards and values critically, supporting them in discovering and developing a personal faith that will guide them throughout their lives.

Chaplaincy

Queen’s College is supported by a full-time Chaplain, who serves as a bridge between the wider church and school community, promoting the school’s Methodist values and ethos. Working closely with the College Leadership Group, the Chaplain contributes to a compassionate and inclusive environment that prioritises care, honesty, tolerance, understanding, and commitment among students and staff.

Each week, the Chaplain leads school worship, and senior assemblies include reflections, prayers, and hymns, warmly welcoming students of all faiths. Key annual services, such as the Remembrance Service, Carol Service, and Founders’ Day Service held at Temple Methodist Church offer meaningful community gatherings. Although these services are Christian-based, they are inclusive and not tied to any particular denomination.

The Chaplain also organises Confirmation classes and offers invaluable support for pastoral care, ensuring students have a well-rounded support network during their time at Queen’s.
